What is Duplex Grade Stainless Steel?
Duplex-grade stainless steel derives its name from its two-phase microstructure consisting of austenitic and ferritic alloys in roughly equal parts (the exact metallurgical proportions vary by grade). As a result, duplex stainless steel grades combine the favorable qualities and benefits of both alloy families while minimizing their weaknesses. No comparable alternatives deliver its cost-effective performance, high strength, and excellent corrosion resistance at its price point.
What is 2507 Super Duplex Stainless Steel?
Grade 2507 stainless steel is a “super” duplex grade that offers better crevice and pitting corrosion resistance than conventional duplex grades and 300-series stainless steels. This nitrogen-enhanced alloy consists of 25% chromium, 4% molybdenum, 7% nickel, and low carbon amounts (up to 0.03%). This unique blend gives Grade 2507 stainless steel plate robust mechanical strength, high mechanical strength, and superior resistance to uniform corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.

Choosing Duplex 2507 Plate from Sabre
Like all duplex stainless steel, Grade 2507 plate offers superior yield strength. A lightweight gauge of this super duplex stainless steel provides a similar design strength to a thicker nickel alloy. This results in savings in weight and overall costs of fabrication.

While it possesses high thermal conductivity, the strength of this super duplex 2507 plate will degrade in long-term exposure to temperatures at or exceeding 600°F.

High-Temperature Performance
- Maximum service temperature: Recommended for applications below 600°F (316°C) to avoid embrittlement.
- Maintains excellent corrosion resistance at high temperatures, but prolonged exposure can reduce toughness.
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 2507 offers excellent resistance to:
- Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: High chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content provide excellent resistance to localized corrosion.
- Stress Corrosion Cracking: Excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.
- General Corrosion: Superior resistance to corrosion in various acidic environments.
Fabrication & Welding Characteristics
- Forming: Can be hot worked between 1875°F and 2250°F, followed by a solution anneal. Cold forming is also possible with common stainless steel methods.
- Welding: Weldable by standard methods. The use of filler metals like E2594 or ER2594 is recommended.
- Heat Treatment: Solution annealing can be performed between 1040 – 1120°C with rapid cooling. It cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507?
The primary difference lies in their chemical composition and, consequently, their performance. Super duplex 2507 contains higher amounts of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen than duplex 2205.
This enriched composition gives 2507 superior corrosion resistance, particularly against pitting and crevice corrosion in high-chloride environments like seawater. As a result, 2507 has a higher Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of over 40, compared to 2205’s PREN of around 35.
While both have high strength, 2507 offers a higher yield and tensile strength. However, 2205 is generally more cost-effective and easier to fabricate.
Is 2507 suitable for our operating temperature range?
Super duplex 2507 is not recommended for applications that involve long-term exposure to temperatures above 570-600°F (300-316°C). Exposure to temperatures in this range can cause the material to become brittle, which reduces its toughness and corrosion resistance. The recommended maximum service temperature is generally below 600°F (316°C) to avoid these issues. For colder environments, it is not recommended for use in temperatures below -50°C.
What is equivalent to 2507 duplex?
Grade 2507 is known by several international designations. The most common equivalents are:
