Certified to Meet Medical Industry Quality Standards

Medical device manufacturers and procurement teams require more than just a material supplier. Every component destined for a surgical instrument, implant, or medical device assembly must be fully traceable, produced from verified material, and sourced from a supplier with a documented quality management system. Sabre Alloys holds certifications that speak directly to those requirements.

The majority of the stainless steel we supply meets Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) domestic sourcing requirements. For medical device manufacturers supplying to U.S. military healthcare programs or government procurement contracts, DFARS compliance is a sourcing requirement that Sabre Alloys is equipped to fulfill.

Specialty Stainless Steel for Medical Applications

Medical components demand material that can withstand repeated sterilization cycles, resist corrosion from bodily fluids and aggressive cleaning agents, meet biocompatibility standards, and maintain dimensional precision through machining and fabrication. Standard commodity grades of stainless steel are often insufficient for these demands, and many of the grades that do meet medical specifications are not readily available through general distribution.

Sabre Alloys specializes in sourcing and supplying the grades that are hard to find. These materials are used in surgical instruments, orthopedic implants, bone screws and plates, medical device housings, sterilization equipment, and diagnostic system components, where material quality and full traceability are essential.

Medical Stainless Steel Grades We Supply

Sabre Alloys stocks specialty stainless grades in plate and bar form across a range of categories relevant to medical device manufacturing. The grades below represent our primary areas of focus for medical applications.

Austenitic Grades

Austenitic stainless steels are the most widely specified family for medical applications due to their excellent corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and suitability for sterilization and fabrication processes.

316/316L Stainless Steel Plate and Bar: 316L is the most broadly specified grade for direct medical use. The addition of molybdenum provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to 304, and the low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, preserving corrosion resistance in fabricated assemblies. It is the standard specification for surgical instruments, orthopedic implants, bone screws and plates, sterilization equipment, and components with direct patient contact.

304/304L Stainless Steel Plate: 304 and 304L are widely used for non-implant medical components and equipment where direct patient contact is not a factor. Their combination of good general corrosion resistance and ease of fabrication makes them a practical choice for medical equipment housings, surgical tables, hospital furniture, and other infrastructure that requires regular chemical cleaning and autoclaving.

Precipitation Hardening Grades

Precipitation hardening stainless steels are available in bar form and are frequently specified for precision surgical instruments and medical device components that require high strength combined with corrosion resistance.

17-4 PH Stainless Steel Bar: One of the most widely used PH grades across demanding industries, 17-4 PH delivers high strength and hardness alongside good corrosion resistance. In medical applications, it is used in precision surgical instruments, orthopedic components, and medical device parts that must hold tight dimensional tolerances and maintain their geometry under mechanical load.

15-5 PH Stainless Steel Bar: A variant of 17-4 PH with improved toughness and more consistent transverse properties, 15-5 PH is specified for medical and surgical applications requiring high strength in all orientations. It is used in gears, fittings, and structural components within medical equipment assemblies where uniform performance across directions is a design requirement.

Duplex Grades

Duplex stainless steels combine austenitic and ferritic microstructures to deliver higher strength than standard austenitic grades alongside excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

2205 Stainless Steel Plate: 2205 provides approximately twice the yield strength of standard austenitic grades, making it well-suited for structural medical components and weight-sensitive applications where strength and corrosion resistance must both be maintained. It is also used in medical equipment exposed to aggressive chemical cleaning and disinfection environments.

If you require a grade not listed here, contact our team. Our mill network gives us the capability to source specialty grades that fall outside standard distribution inventory.

In-House Processing and Rapid Delivery for Medical Manufacturers

Medical device production operates on precise timelines, and material delays translate directly into production setbacks. Sabre Alloys is structured to respond to time-sensitive procurement requirements.

Our facility includes in-house waterjet and plasma cutting, allowing us to deliver plate and bar cut to your exact specifications. We maintain inventory in large and heavy-gauge plate sizes that are difficult to source through general distribution, and our same-day and next-day shipping capabilities ensure that urgent orders are fulfilled without extended lead times.
