Stainless Steel for Oil & Gas

Exotic Grade Plate and Bar for Oil & Gas Fabricators and OEMs

At Sabre Alloys, we supply fabricators, OEMs, and procurement teams in the oil and gas industry with exotic grades of stainless steel plate and bar, including super duplex 2507, duplex 2205, and H grades.

From wellhead and manifold components to pressure vessels and heat exchangers, we provide corrosion-resistant grades that hold up in sour, high-chloride, and high-pressure environments, with in-house processing and rapid delivery to keep your fabrication schedule on track.

A privately owned, Houston, Texas-based distributor, Sabre Alloys is ISO 9001:2015 certified with an AS9100-certified QMS, giving oil and gas procurement teams the documented quality systems they need for critical material sourcing.

Specialty Stainless Steel for Oil and Gas Applications

Oil and gas environments push materials to their limits: high chloride exposure from produced water and seawater injection, sour service conditions involving H2S and CO2, wide temperature swings between wellhead and process equipment, and constant risk of pitting and crevice corrosion. Standard grades often can’t hold up under these conditions, and specialty materials are frequently hard to source in the sizes and quantities fabricators need. Sabre Alloys stocks these hard-to-source grades and can provide the stainless steel plate and bar you need for the most demanding oil and gas environments, including:

  • 2507: Higher chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content than 2205 for superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion
  • 2205: A cost-effective alternative to 2507 with strong resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, well suited for piping, vessels, and structural components exposed to corrosive process fluids.
  • 347/347H: Niobium-stabilized for high-temperature service without post-weld heat treatment
  • 321/321H: Titanium-stabilized for resistance to intergranular corrosion at elevated temperatures

Processing

If you need your stainless steel processed to specific dimensions, we can do that for you. We provide processing services with our HD plasma, waterjet, and laser cutters and a 14′ shear and bar saw to cut plate and bar to your specifications. We stock plate up to 120″ wide and 6″ thick, and offer same-day and next-day delivery to keep urgent oil and gas fabrication orders on schedule.

Quality You Can Count On

Sabre Alloys operates under an ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100 certified quality management system. Our stainless steel plate and bar are manufactured to conform to ASTM A240 and ASTM A276/A279 material standards. Together, this gives oil and gas procurement and engineering teams a documented, traceable quality process behind every order.

FAQs

What grade of stainless steel is best for oil and gas equipment?
The right grade depends on the environment. Duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507 resist chloride pitting and stress corrosion cracking in high-pressure, high-chloride service, while 316/316L suits moderate corrosion exposure and 347/347H and 321/321H perform well in high-temperature refinery and petrochemical equipment. Sabre Alloys stocks all these plate and bar grades.

What is the difference between duplex and super duplex stainless steel?
Duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507 share a two-phase austenitic-ferritic structure, but 2507 contains higher chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen levels, giving it a higher Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number. This makes 2507 better suited to offshore and high-chloride oil and gas environments, while 2205 offers strong performance at a lower cost.

Is stainless steel plate suitable for sour gas service?
Selecting stainless steel for sour gas (H2S-containing) service requires careful grade selection, since sulfide stress cracking risk varies by alloy, hardness, and heat treatment. Duplex and super duplex grades are commonly evaluated for sour environments. Always confirm specific sour service requirements, such as NACE MR0175, with your engineering team and material supplier before specifying a grade.

What certifications should a stainless steel supplier for oil and gas have?
Oil and gas procurement teams should look for suppliers with ISO 9001:2015-certified quality management systems and documented material traceability, including mill test reports. Sabre Alloys is ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100 certified, and our stainless steel plate and bar conform to ASTM A240 and ASTM A276/A279 standards for verified quality and consistency.

Can super duplex 2507 be used in offshore oil and gas applications?
Yes. Super duplex 2507’s high resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and pitting makes it well suited for offshore platforms, including topside structural components, manifolds, and equipment exposed to seawater and high-chloride produced water. Sabre Alloys stocks 2507 plate and bar for fabricators supplying offshore oil and gas projects.
